RNP BUSINESS GUIDES / Applications & premises

Can Starlink keep our point-of-sale system online?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Starlink can provide another internet path for a point-of-sale system, but it cannot guarantee payment acceptance or repair an outage inside the payment provider. Test the exact terminals, order flow and recovery process. Staff must know the difference between an offline or pending transaction and a confirmed payment.

Which failure is stopping the payment?

Separate a lost premises connection from an unavailable payment platform, a local Wi-Fi fault or a terminal problem. A second WAN can address some connectivity failures but leaves other causes unchanged. RNP recommends recording the failure message and testing another approved application before assuming the internet provider is responsible.

Map the whole sale: terminal, order display, printer, stock update and back-office record. The payment reader may reconnect while a kitchen printer or stock synchronization process remains unavailable. The project should specify which parts of the transaction must keep working.

02 / Applications & premises

What should a payment-continuity rehearsal include?

Use the payment provider’s approved testing procedure
StageWhat to establish
Normal saleThe intended device and local network support the ordinary workflow
Primary connection lostStaff recognize the state and the backup becomes usable
Interrupted transactionThe operator follows the provider’s method for checking its status
Offline operation, if supportedThe device and payment type are eligible and staff understand the limits
Connection restoredPending records reconcile and duplicate actions are avoided
End-of-shift reviewThe responsible person checks outstanding or declined records

Can offline mode replace a backup connection?

Offline payment support depends on the provider, hardware and payment type. Square describes offline processing for supported setups, but its pending-payment guidance makes clear that later completion is not assured and the seller carries specified payment risks.

Treat offline mode as a documented operating choice. The store should know which devices support it, who can authorize its use and how outstanding payments are reviewed. A backup connection can reduce the need to use that mode without removing the processor’s rules or financial risk.

How should the backup prioritize checkout?

Agree which traffic remains allowed during fallback. It may be sensible to defer cloud backups, system updates or guest streaming while payment and order systems recover. Have the network administrator implement and test the agreed policy; a verbal priority does not configure a router.

Check power for the full checkout chain. A running Starlink terminal does not help an unpowered access point or payment counter. Include the necessary local equipment in the outage exercise and record any manual step staff must take.

05 / Applications & premises

What should staff receive?

  1. A short guide to recognizing network, terminal and provider-service problems.
  2. The provider-approved process for checking an uncertain transaction.
  3. The approved offline procedure, if applicable to the actual equipment.
  4. An escalation contact and an owner for pending-payment reconciliation.
  5. A record of the tested failover behavior and the limits of battery runtime.
