Will Starlink work during a business power outage?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Starlink can only support work during a local power outage if the terminal and every required part of the network still have suitable power. Include the router, switches, access points and critical end devices. Choose battery backup from the measured load and required runtime, then test the complete operating chain.

Firewall or routerDoes it remain powered when both WANs are available?
Network switchesWhich switches carry the critical devices or power access points?
Wireless access pointsAre the working areas covered while the building supply is off?
Payment, dispatch or office devicesDo batteries or protected outlets keep the actual task usable?

Why are UPS capacity and runtime different?

APC explains that a UPS must support the connected load within both its watt and VA ratings. Runtime is a separate question and changes with the equipment load. Use the manufacturer’s runtime information for the intended model and load; a large VA number alone does not state how long the business can work.

Measure the complete load where practical, including equipment powered indirectly through network switches. Ask the supplier to identify the expected operating range and any reserve. The installation should be reviewed by a competent provider for the actual electrical and environmental conditions.

What does a simple battery estimate show?

Hypothetical energy estimate — verify with the manufacturer’s runtime curve

400 Wh × 0.80 usable fraction ÷ 100 W load ≈ 3.2 hours

This example assumes a 400 watt-hour battery, a combined usable-energy factor of 80% and a steady 100-watt load. These are invented planning inputs, not Starlink power specifications or a promise for a particular UPS.

Real runtime depends on the battery, conversion losses, load behavior, age and temperature. A UPS rated only in VA cannot be inserted into the watt-hour part of this formula. Use the calculation to understand the relationship, then select and test equipment using its actual specifications.

What runtime should the business ask for?

Define the operational goal. Some sites need enough time to finish transactions and close safely; others need continuity until an approved alternate power source is available. These goals produce different budgets and procedures. Put the required duration and supported tasks in the brief.

Reduce unnecessary load before increasing battery size. A critical network may not need every guest access point, display or nonessential computer during an outage. Any reduced-power arrangement should be documented so staff know which areas and devices remain available.

What should be demonstrated at handover?

  1. A controlled loss of the normal supply leaves the required connectivity path operating.
  2. Staff can identify remaining battery capacity or the approved shutdown point.
  3. The agreed essential task works throughout the required test period.
  4. Return of normal power does not leave equipment in an unexpected state.
  5. There is a maintenance owner, battery replacement record and safe test procedure.
