RNP BUSINESS GUIDES / Applications & premises

Can we offer guest Wi-Fi over Starlink?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Yes, a business can design guest Wi-Fi over its Starlink connection using an eligible service and suitable networking equipment. Separate guest access from business systems, control its share of capacity and decide what happens during an outage. A different Wi-Fi name alone does not prove that guests are isolated from internal devices.

What does guest separation actually require?

Ubiquiti’s guidance distinguishes network isolation, such as a guest VLAN with appropriate firewall rules, from client isolation between guest devices. These address different access paths. A captive portal is an access or sign-in mechanism; it should not be treated as proof of isolation.

Have the administrator show the intended behavior with test devices. A guest should receive the approved internet access while being unable to reach protected business resources. Document any deliberate exception, such as a visitor printing service, rather than leaving a broad internal network accessible by accident.

Which guest policy should the business choose?

How should guest demand be estimated?

Estimate the peak number of connected devices and the likely activity at that time. Visitors streaming video create a different workload from guests checking messages. Use observations from a comparable operating period if the site already offers access, and mark assumptions when the venue is new.

Include the guest network in the data budget. If Starlink is a fallback for the business, unrestricted guest traffic may consume capacity needed by payment terminals or staff. Agree the policy before launch and test that it actually applies when the primary WAN is unavailable.

04 / Applications & premises

What should the acceptance test cover?

  1. A fresh guest device can connect through the intended process.
  2. Protected office, payment and management resources are not reachable from the guest network.
  3. Client-to-client access behaves according to the approved isolation policy.
  4. The normal guest areas have usable coverage with representative devices.
  5. The agreed limits and fallback policy operate during a controlled test.
  6. Staff can resolve ordinary connection problems without sharing administrator access.

05 / Applications & premises

What should the operator receive?

Keep the guest connection instructions, coverage boundaries and support process in a short operating note. If the venue collects visitor information through a portal, the business should define that requirement explicitly rather than enabling extra collection by default.

RNP can assess the installation and local network scope with the person responsible for security and guest operations. The resulting proposal should separate internet service, access points and guest-network configuration so the venue can see what each part delivers.
