RNP BUSINESS GUIDES / Is it the right connection?
Is Starlink or 5G better for business backup?
THE SHORT ANSWER
Choose the backup that still works when your primary connection fails and can support the essential workload at your site. Cellular may be simpler where coverage and capacity are strong. Starlink deserves a trial where cellular performance is poor or a different access path is valuable, provided sky view, power and installation are practical.
01 / Is it the right connection?
Start with the failure you want to cover
RNP recommends writing the outage scenario before choosing hardware. A damaged street cable, an exhausted mobile network at a busy event and a building-wide power loss are different problems. Two internet subscriptions do not necessarily protect against the same set of failures.
List shared dependencies explicitly: mains supply, UPS, firewall, network switch, Wi-Fi access points and the cloud application itself. A second WAN connection cannot help if the only router has failed. Nor can either connection restore an unavailable payment or inventory service operated by someone else.

What should the site trial compare?
| Question | Cellular trial | Starlink trial |
|---|---|---|
| Can it be installed here? | Test the proposed router or antenna position | Assess the terminal position and cable route |
| Does it work when staff need it? | Observe normal and busy operating periods | Observe the same applications and periods |
| What happens during primary failure? | Prove router switching and session recovery | Repeat the same controlled outage exercise |
| What remains powered? | Include modem and network equipment | Include terminal, power supply and network equipment |
| Who restores service? | Record carrier, account and local support contacts | Record service account and installation responsibilities |

How do you avoid a misleading cellular test?
A phone signal indicator at the front door is an incomplete test of a backup router in an equipment cupboard. Use the intended hardware and location where possible. Compare the real application behavior, including upload performance, at the times the business is busiest. Keep the provider and SIM or subscription details with the observations.
Apply the same discipline to satellite: do not compare an overloaded indoor mobile test with a quiet outdoor Starlink demonstration. Establish an equivalent workload and describe any differences you could not eliminate. The useful result may be that either option works, or that neither design is ready.
04 / Is it the right connection?
Does the existing firewall support both options?
The firewall needs suitable WAN connectivity and a health-check policy for the chosen service. Starlink’s third-party-router guidance describes WAN integration using DHCP and notes that the physical connection depends on the kit. Ask the installer to identify the exact hardware and adapters instead of assuming every terminal connects identically.
Configure what the backup is allowed to carry. Keeping guest downloads and scheduled transfers off a constrained fallback can matter more than buying a faster advertised link. The business should approve these restrictions before an outage makes them visible to staff or customers.
05 / Is it the right connection?
What is a defensible selection rule?
- Reject an option that fails the required work in the actual installation position.
- Prefer the option that covers the documented outage scenario with fewer unresolved dependencies.
- Compare installed cost and operating effort, including data and routine readiness checks.
- Retain the trial record so a future carrier, site or equipment change triggers a new test.
