RNP BUSINESS GUIDES / Is it the right connection?

Can Starlink be my business’s primary internet?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Starlink can be a practical primary connection for a business with poor terrestrial options, if the site has a suitable sky view and the connection passes an actual-work trial. Keep another usable path until the trial establishes that ordering, calls, remote access and uploads work during your operating hours.

What problem would the new connection solve?

RNP recommends starting with the business task that fails today. A shipping team unable to print labels has a different requirement from an office trying to move large design files. Write down the current provider, the recurring failure and the work that stops. That description is a better starting point than a preferred download-speed number.

Separate a lack of usable broadband from an unreliable local network. If a wired computer works but handheld devices fail between warehouse racks, replacing the internet provider alone may leave the problem intact. Check a wired endpoint and the working areas before deciding which part of the system needs investment.

What does the Decatur installation establish?

RNP completed an installation for a rural warehouse outside Decatur, Texas, where limited broadband affected inventory, shipping and office work. The documented scope covered survey, mounting, cabling, internal networking, testing and handover. The case study includes an actual installation photograph.

That project demonstrates completed work in a relevant setting. It does not establish a speed guarantee for another building. The published case has no confirmed price, completion duration or before-and-after throughput measurements. Those fields remain unconfirmed rather than being converted into a performance promise.

When is a primary connection a reasonable choice?

  1. Your existing wired or cellular options do not support the essential work, and the Starlink trial does.
  2. The terminal position remains suitable as trees, stored materials or neighboring structures change.
  3. The business has approved the plan, account owner, support contact and local network design.
  4. The people operating the site know the fallback process and the limits of battery power.
  5. You have retained dated observations from normal busy periods, not only an empty-building speed test.

How should the business change over?

Use an overlap period where practical. Move a small group or a representative workflow first, then widen the trial. Agree on what would trigger a return to the previous connection. A trial that only confirms browsing is insufficient if the business depends on a specialist application or a remote server.

At handover, keep the equipment inventory, cable route, account responsibility and test results together. Schedule a review after the site has operated normally. If a good existing circuit already meets the requirement, adding satellite as a second path may be a more useful project than replacing the primary service.

About this guide
