Will our company VPN work over Starlink?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Many business VPN arrangements can work over Starlink, but compatibility depends on the VPN, firewall, addressing and access policy. Test the exact company configuration. Separate staff connecting outward to a corporate service from remote users connecting inward to a system at the Starlink site, and include reconnection after a WAN change.

Which direction does the connection start?

What does Starlink’s documentation confirm?

Starlink documents VPN compatibility as configuration-dependent and does not provide support for configuring a customer’s VPN. Treat the company’s actual client, gateway and policies as the test subject rather than assuming all products behave alike.

For inbound arrangements, the current IP policy is also relevant: default carrier-grade NAT blocks inbound connections. An administrator may need a different approved design. A successful outbound laptop VPN test does not prove that a remote user can reach an office server in the opposite direction.

What should a useful VPN trial do?

  1. Use the normal managed device and approved VPN client, with the real authentication method.
  2. Open the applications and internal resources staff actually need.
  3. Transfer a representative file and continue an ordinary work session.
  4. Check behavior after a controlled primary-to-Starlink switch if this is a backup design.
  5. Repeat after the primary connection returns and record any manual reconnect step.
  6. Keep application and gateway observations with timestamps for the administrator.

Why might login work but an application still fail?

Authentication is only one stage. The company may have application permissions, address-based rules, name-resolution settings or routes that affect access after the tunnel connects. The network administrator should compare the failing application with a known working path and review the relevant logs.

Avoid changing security controls simply to make the test pass. The useful outcome is an approved configuration that supports the business task. If a policy requires a stable source address, resolve that requirement directly and include the chosen design in the project scope.

How should recovery be explained to staff?

Write the shortest approved sequence for returning to work: recognize the interruption, allow the client to reconnect, then follow the specified manual step if required. Make clear who to contact when the sequence fails. Staff should not have to edit router settings during a service interruption.

RNP recommends recording the observed recovery time separately from the router’s switching time. This gives the business a realistic expectation and helps distinguish a connectivity fault from a corporate-access issue. Repeat the test after a significant VPN or firewall change.
